Why is Mercy adding ultrasound in 2026?

The overturning of Roe v. Wade marked a pivotal moment in American history, the result of years of pro-life ministry and advocacy for women and their unborn children. While this decision was a significant victory, abortion rates in the United States continue to rise. Increased access to abortion pills and a culture that promotes abortion have made it more available than ever.

Today, abortion is frequently described as healthcare and even celebrated. Women are often told that having a child will derail their future or prevent them from achieving their goals. As a result, motherhood is undervalued, and declining birth rates reflect this reality. The abortion industry continues to portray unborn babies as lifeless tissue, while abortion pills can now be ordered online and delivered without direct medical supervision.

In the midst of this, pregnancy centers have a powerful opportunity to offer truth, compassion, and support. One of the most impactful tools available is ultrasound. When a woman sees her baby and hears the heartbeat for the first time, it can be a life-changing moment. An ultrasound allows her to recognize that the life growing within her is not just tissue, but a unique human being made in the image of God.

Conversations about options and the risks of abortion are important, but pairing those conversations with a free ultrasound can be a turning point. Research shows that when women receive counseling and see their baby on ultrasound, 70% choose life. This is why Mercy will begin offering ultrasound services in 2026.

The first step is the renovation of Mercy’s 921 Center at 921 Walnut St., scheduled to begin soon. This renovation will reconfigure the first floor to include a medical office, counseling room, ultrasound room, and lab space. Following the renovation, Mercy will purchase an ultrasound machine and bring on qualified medical staff. Once open the new center will be called Mercy Women’s Center.

Mercy Ministries at 105 S. 5th St. will continue to offer free services to women which include pregnancy tests, options counseling, pregnancy and parenting education, Earn While You Learn program, Baby Boutique, Bible studies, community referrals, and resources such as diapers, formula, and gently used clothing.

Thank you for your continued support of Mercy Ministries. Because of you, we can expand our services and provide life-affirming care to women and families in our community.
